How to find the hiring manager for a job posted on Greenhouse

A Greenhouse posting names nobody, but the company's full job board groups every opening by department. Open the board, read the department heading above your role, count the sibling openings, and search LinkedIn for the head of that department.

Does a Greenhouse posting name the hiring manager?

No. Greenhouse gives every job an internal hiring team with named hiring managers, recruiters and coordinators, and none of it reaches the public page. The posting shows a title, a location and the description. The useful part sits one level up, on the company's job board, where every open role is grouped under its department.

How do you recognise a Greenhouse posting?

The three shapes a Greenhouse job link takes
LinkWhat it is
job-boards.greenhouse.io/acme/jobs/5123456The current hosted board. The word after the domain is the company.
boards.greenhouse.io/acme/jobs/5123456The older hosted board. Same structure.
acme.com/careers/role?gh_jid=5123456A posting embedded in the company's own site. The gh_jid value is the Greenhouse job number.

Delete everything after the company name, so the link ends at job-boards.greenhouse.io/acme, and you are on the full board.

How do you find the hiring manager for a Greenhouse job?

  1. Open the full board and find your role's department. The heading above your role is the team as the company names it internally, which is often more precise than anything in the description.
  2. Count the open roles under that heading. Four openings in one department means a team lead who is hiring for all of them and is expecting messages about it. One opening in a department of its own often means the role reports to a founder or a VP.
  3. Search LinkedIn for the head of that department. Companies on Greenhouse are mostly startups and scale-ups, where the department head and the hiring manager are frequently the same person. The search itself is on the LinkedIn page.
  4. Read the description for a reporting line. When it says “reporting to our Director of Product”, that overrides the guess from the department heading.

Of the 2,086 job postings looked up on DearHiringManager between 2026-05-24 and 2026-08-24, 92 (4.4%) were Greenhouse postings. The full split by source, with the method, is in the Outreach Index.

Who reads your application in Greenhouse?

A recruiter first, in most setups. The hiring manager sees candidates the recruiter moves forward, which is why a strong application can sit unread by the one person who would recognise it. A short email to the manager does not skip that step. It gives them a reason to open your record. When to send it and what to say: email the hiring manager after applying.

If the form has a free-text box, use it too: what to write in the message to hiring manager field. For the name-to-address step, see how to find out who the hiring manager is. Roles posted through Lever leak a different clue.

The shortcut is the same on every job site. Paste the Greenhouse posting URL into the hiring manager finder and it returns the name, a verified work email and the LinkedIn profile of the person who owns that role, in about a minute.

Questions

How do I get from a Greenhouse posting to the full job board?

Delete everything in the address after the company name, so it ends at job-boards.greenhouse.io/company or boards.greenhouse.io/company. That page lists every open role under its department.

What is gh_jid in a job link?

The Greenhouse job number, attached to a posting that is embedded in the company's own website. It tells you the company uses Greenhouse even though the address is the company's.

Does Greenhouse notify the hiring manager when I apply?

It depends on how the company configured the job, and you cannot see that from outside. Assume a recruiter reviews first and the manager sees candidates who are moved forward.

The department has one open role. Who is the manager?

Often a founder or a VP. A department with a single opening is usually small or new, and the role tends to report to whoever leads the function.
